Allianz GAA NHL Tipperary 1-14 Kilkenny 0-13
Tipperary defeated Kilkenny in an entertaining Allianz NHL played at the third time of asking in Semple Stadium before an attendance of over 20,000. The game was evenly contested throughout but the pivotal moments came before the interval when a Kilkenny goal chance from Aidan Fogarty was blocked by Brendan Cummins and a Tipperary goal chance was dispatched to the net by Eoin Kelly. It gave Tipperary a 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead and they stayed ahead to the finish. Kilkenny’s backs were most impressive throughout especially the half line of Tommy Walsh, Jackie Tyrrell and J.J. Delaney. Indeed both Tommy and Jackie managed to put a point each on the score sheet whilst also attending to their defensive duties. Kilkenny’s novel pairing of John Tennyson, who struck three points from play, and P.J. Delaney shaded the midfield battle. However the Kilkenny forwards struggled to make an impact and a number of the eleven wides they hit were scorable. The loss of Michael Rice and Richie Hogan to injury in the second half made Kilkenny’s task all the harder. One bright note in attack was the display of John Mulhall who registered three good points from play.
