Club History
The earliest record of a GAA club in Paulstown / Goresbridge Parish is a Football club in Jeanville in 1906 when they won the County Championship in Junior Football.
A Club was formed in 1932 by Tony Dalton, a teacher in Goresbridge. The Chairman was Tom Walsh TD and Secretary was Willie Doherty. This club was in existence until 1936 when they had a falling out with the County Board and withdrew from Kilkenny for a few years. A football team from Shankill played in Carlow during this period and some players from Paulstown/Goresbridge played with St. Finbarrs in Gowran. A hurling team from Paulstown played in the Carlow County Final in the early 1930,s, while a Carlow County hurling final was also played in Paulstown around that time.
In January 1944 Bill Hennessy, Jim McDonald, Joe Glennon and Paddy Brennan among others reformed the club under the three parish rule with a team called Castle Rovers. Among the players on this side were legendery Wexford fullback Nick O’Donnell, leading hurling coach Monsignor Tommy Maher and All Ireland winning fullback with Kilkenny in 1947 Pat ‘Diamond’ Hayden.
In 1954 the one parish rule was re-introduced. The Paulstown team was reformed with Chairman Bill Hennessy and Secretary Willie Doherty who both continued in these capacities until 1969. In 1964 the club name was changed to Barrow Rangers by which name it is known today.
In 1970 a separate club Paulstown/Goresbridge was formed to promote under age teams. The founder members were Laz Breen, Joe English and Paddy Doyle. The big breakthrough came in 1977 when Under 16 Roinn C League was won. This was the first ever success in hurling by any team from the parish and was to form the foundation of championship winning teams during the 1980s.
Football
The Football team of the club known as Barrowmount contested 8 Northern football championship finals between 1961 when they went on to win the County Final- and 1972. winning 5 of these.
A Camogie section was formed in the club in 1999.
Following eight losing appearances in under age County Finals the under 18 side finally brought success in 2004 with a 2 –– 1 to 1 – 3 victory over Piltown. They have since gone on to win titles at under 14 and Junior, together with a schools B title’ship 1990, 1993.
