Conahy qualify for All-Ireland showpiece Conahy Shamrocks have qualified for All-Ireland junior club hurling final when they defeated a tough Glen Rovers (Armoy) side from Antrim in the All-Ireland semi-final in Darver, Co. Louth. Conahy produced a strong performance throughout with the defence resolute in the face of some intense pressure from their Northerner opponents. The attack, and in particular the full-forward line of Gavin Nolan, Alan Healy and Michéal Lawler proved a near-constant threat to the Armoy defence. It was the hat-trick of goals from Alan Healy gave Conahy the advantage that they held throughout and the game finished with the locals winning on a 4-15 to 1-10 score line. Moyle Rovers from Tipperary now provide the opposition in the All-Ireland final in Croke Park on Saturday, February 9th. The locals can expect a tough challenge from their opponents who enjoyed a handsome victory in their semi-final over Galway side Sylane. Great Progress It has a year of great development for the club as hopes are high for continuing growth and optimism. The construction of the new facilities in the Polo Grounds, which commenced during the summer, is beginning to take shape and should be fully functional early next year. The development committee who have been given the task of managing the project, have been working extremely hard throughout the past year planning and seeking funding for the project which thus far has been very successful. The new building should be of immense value to the club and the parish in general in the coming years and it has been widely supported by local parishioners. It is hoped that it should be a major social outlet for everyone in the locality as well as an important building for the every day running and organisation of the club. Hurling Action Unfortunately, the success of the Polo Grounds development was not matched by success of the hurling fields this year. The junior hurlers showed some early season promise when they captured the All-County League title defeating Blacks & Whites in an excellent game in Nowlan Park. They defeated the same opposition as well as Cloneen in the opening rounds of the Northern championship but after a dramatic draw in the first game played in atrocious conditions, they were second best to Danesfort in a most disappointing defeat in the semi-final replay in Freshford. The junior B hurlers had an equally disappointing exit at the hands of Dicksboro in the northern championship but had some decent victories in the league. At the time of writing, the U-21 hurlers have reached the North final after a great run, defeating Graig-Ballycallan, O'Loughlins and James Stephens. In football, the intermediate footballers suffered a double disappointment when they were defeated by St. Lachtain's in the league final and subsequently were defeated by Thomastown in the County semi-final. Much Underage Activity It has continued to be a hectic year for under-age activity this year at all levels. The minor hurlers were a great hope for success this year but they were to suffer real heartbreak when they lost to Mullinavat by a single point in the Roinn B championship semi-final after a thrilling match ended level after normal time. The U-16 and U-14 hurlers suffered a similar fate in their respective championship campaigns but produced some good performances along the way. In football, however, the U-16's managed to capture a league title this year. Once again this year, there was a flurry of activity at U-10, U-11 and under-12 level with many competitions taking place throughout the year, in particular the Kevin Bergin U-10 tournament and the Jim Comerford U-12 tournament organised by the club each year. Fundraising In further off field activities, the annual golf classic held in June in Castlecomer Golf Club was another resounding success. Other fundraising efforts were also successful, namely the greyhound race night amongst others. The club was again grateful for the continued support of club sponsors Downey Logistics, Foulksrath throughout the year. County Players The club was also represented by the following players at inter-county level: Alan Healy (U-21 & Intermediate Hurling), Gavin Nolan (U-21 & Intermediate Hurling), Denis Kelly (Intermediate Hurling), Paul & Declan Buggy (Senior Football), Kieran Mooney (Minor Hurling) and David Healy (U-16 Hurling). |
