R/Inistioge 1-13 Thomastown 1-6

The final primary schools hurling final of  2009 was played in Nowlan
Park on Thursday last. The Corn De Bhaldraithe finalists were Roinn A
finalists Rower/Inistioge and Roinn B side Thomastown. In the end the
honours went to Rower/Inistioge who completed a hurling/ football
country cup double while  it was second time unlucky for Thomastown
who have been beaten finalists on each occasion.
Rower/Inistioge were quickly on the scoreboard and had four points to
their credit by the twelfth minute. Three points coming from David
kelly and one fine effort from Kevin Murphy. Richard Leahy, Sam Watkin
and David Kelly added three more before Thomastown registered their
first score. Thomastown were trying hard to get on the scoreboard and
in the twentieth minute they looked likely to score a goal when a
piledriver from Peter Blanchfield looked goalbound only for Inistioge goalie Jack Walsh
made a brilliant save to deny them. Sam Watkin added an excellent point
for Rower/Inistioge before Robbie Donnelly got Thomastown off the mark
with a good point from an acute angle in the twentysecond minute.
David Kelly had the final score of the half with a point from a '65.
At half time Rower/Inistioge had a commanding lead 0-9 to 0-1.
Thomastown came out strongly in the second half and John Donnelly
pointed in the third minute. John then added a goal three minutes
later when he pulled first time and buried the ball in the net. Danny
Monks added a point for Thomastown straight from the puckout and now
the deficit was down to three points. Rower/ Inistioge's response was
swift however and Shane Ryan, Sam Watkin and Dylan Kehoe added points
to stretch their lead to six again. The killer blow came for
Thomastown eight minutes from the end when Kevin Murphy was quickest
to react to a breaking ball and buried the ball in the net. Still
Thomastown refused to throw in the towel and James Burke fired over an
excellent point . Kevin Murphy replied with a point for
Rower/Inistioge . Thomastown kept coming forward looking for scores
and John Donnelly's free went barely over the bar. Time had run out
for the brave Thomastown boys and there was no denying the winners,
The cup was destined for Rower/Inistioge. Dylan Caulfield had an
excellent game in the Thomastown goal. John Murphy and Brian Staunton
hurled well in defence. James Burke and Craig Butler worked hard in
midfield while up front Aaron Kehoe, John Donnelly and Danny and Rory
monks also hurled well. Rower/ Inistioge had excellent performers in
Jack Walsh in goal, Pat Lyng in defence, Richard Leahy at midfield,
while up front Sam Watkin, David Kelly and Kevin Murphy stood out in
attack.
