Conahy,runners up in 2008, went one better in 2009, with a thoroughy merited
victory in the Tedcastle Oils Roinn D final in Palmerstown on Friday
night. They got a dream start when full forward Sean Brennan finished
to the net in the first minute. James Bergin aded a second goal in the
third minute and Conahy were in the driving seat from then on. Windgap
were finding it hard to withstand the Conahy attack and James Bergin
pointed to put his side seven points clear. Emmet Landy lifted his side
with a super point in the sixth minute and Niall Walsh added another
point after a brave run through the Conahy defence. James Bergin added
two points for Conahy before Sean Brennan scored his second goal in the
thirteenth minute. Conahy were playing some great hurling at this stage
and centre back Edmund Delaney pointed a '65 into the wind to stretch
the lead. Niall Walsh was doing his utmost to haul his side back into
the game and added a point from a free in the twentyfourth minute. As
the half time whistle sounded, Conahy had a commanding lead: 3-4 to 0-3.
Windgap were not about to throw in the towel and Niall Walsh pointed
within 30 seconds of the restart. Conahy replied with a point from a
'65 from Edmund Delaney. Windgap were trying everything in their power
to get back on terms and they were rewarded for their efforts when a
long ball from Emmet Landy was finished to the net by Niall Walsh. That
was as close as they were to get and a two goal salvo from Conahy's
Daniel O Shea in the fifteenth minute saw them take a commanding lead.
Windgap could find no more and Conahy added a further 1-2 to run out
deserving winners. Conahy played a very attractive brand of hurling and
showed great teamwork. They had excellent players in goalie John Byrne,
Niall Coogan and Edmund Delaney in defence,, midfielders Oliver Feehan
and Pauric Walsh, and up front James Bergin and Sean Brennan were
always to the fore. Windgap put up an excellent show and although they
were defeated, they can be proud of their performance. Every player
battled as hard as they could and goalie James Culleton had an
excellent game. David Doyle was a tenacious defender. Darragh O Shea
played a stormer at centre back. Emmett Landy got through an amount of
work in midfield and Niall Walsh was outstanding in attack.
