Final 20/06/09 Nowlan Park 12.30

Clara 1-6 Rower /Inistioge 0-7

Educational Supplies Roinn A Final
Clara 1-6 Rower/Inistioge 0-7

The final match of the day in Nowlan Park on Saturday was the Educational
Supplies Roinn A Final. Clara and Rower/Inistioge had met on two
occasions previously and the score was one all. Clara had come out on
top in the league while Rower/Inistioge had been victorious in the Corn
De Bháldraithe semi final. Victory in this final went to Clara  after a
wonderful game of high quality hurling. Clara got off the mark with a
point in the fifth minute from a free by Ben Leydon. Rower/Inistioge
replied quickly with a pointed free from Kevin Murphy. Clara edged in
front again with a point from Ben Leydon. Clara were applying strong
pressure now and they scored what turned out to be the decisive score
in the eighteenth minute when Brian Nolan pulled first time on the
sliotar and buried it into the net. Rower/Inistioge went on the attack
and their pressure earned them a '65 which was converted by David
Kelly. Half time score Clara 1-2 Rower/Inistioge 0-2.

Everything was set up for a great second half and that was exactly how
it turned out. Right from the restart both sides tore into the action
and we were treated to a fantastic display of skilful intense hurling.
Goalkeepers Jack Walsh and Jason Barcoe were called into action and
were performing admirably. Rower/Inistioge scored first when Dylan
Kehoe scored an excellent point  from a difficult angle under extreme
pressure in the fifth minute. Rower/Inistioge were applying maximum
pressure now and this earned them a free when a Clara defender was
pressurised into overcarrying. The resultant free was converted by
Kevin Murphy. A minute later and the sides drew level thanks to a point
from play by David Kelly. The fat was in the fire now and Clara
responded with a point from a free  from Ben Leydon. Luke Scanlon then scored a
super point from play for Clara and Ben Leydon added another point midway through the
half when he converted a '65. Rower/Inistioge threw everything in their
power to get back on terms and when Kevin Murphy was fouled he
converted the free to reduce the deficit to two points. Back came Clara
again and their pressure earned them a '65 which was converted by Ben
Leydon. It was do or die now for Rower/Inistioge and they put the Clara
defence under extreme pressure but could not find a way through. An
injury time free from Pat Lyng went over the bar but the title was
destined for Clara. We had been treated to a wonderful game of hurling
and both sides deserve great credit for providing such a spectacle.
