Mullinavat Are Senior Football Champions

Sunday, 27 August 2017 at 9AM

Mullinavat 3-12 Railyard 2-5

Mullinavat ran out deserving winners in the 125th Kilkenny Football Final sponsored by J J Kavanagh and Sons. The game was played in ideal conditions in Nowlan Park on Saturday evening. Free flowing Mullinavat built up an 11 point lead by half time (2-6 to 0-1) but, like true champions, the Railyard roared back in the 3rd quarter and reduced the lead to just 3 points mid way through the half. Mullinavat steadied the ship however and a John Walsh goal 10 minutes from time proved decisive.

Picture shows Paul Kavanagh of J J Kavanagh and Sons presenting the cup to Mullinavat captain Tom Aylward. Also in picture is Tom O Reilly Football Board Chairman. Mullinavat will be away to the Offaly Senior B champions in the AIB Leinster Club Intermediate championship on October 21st.

Meath Prove Too Strong in Football Semi-Final

Monday, 24 July 2017 at 10AM

Kilkenny more than held their own for long periods of this game in Nowlan Park on Saturday and reached the break just 3 points in arrears. However, the strength of the Meath team came to fruition particularly in the third quarter and they ran out convincing winners 2-21 to 2-8. Meath now go on to meet Kerry in the All Ireland Final.

Although disappointed with the result, the Kilkenny Management and team can look back on a successful season. Their involvement in the British Inter County Championship has given much needed game time to the squad and it is well to remember that prior to their involvement in the UK Kilkenny usually ended up with a severe hiding in the first round of the Leinter Junior Championship. They have now proved themselves reasonably competitive at All Ireland Semi-Final level against Meath this year and Mayo a few seasons back.

The game was preceded by an under 14 challenge between Kilkenny and Carlow.

Kilkenny reached the semi-final in 2014 and matched Mayo right up to the final quarter of that game. Kilkenny were unbeaten in their UK campaign and are sure to give it a right go on Saturday in Nowlan Park.  The game will be preceded by an under 14 Football tie between Kilkenny and Carlow at 1.15.
