Kilkenny 0-26 Offaly 4-9
Kilkenny were made work all the way today in Tullamore before they eventually ran out with a 5 point victory over a fired up Offaly side. An Offaly goal within a minute really set up this contest and when they added a second 15 minutes later some in the 8000 strong crowd sensed a possible upset. But 8 unanswered points from the 30th minute gave Kilkenny a 5 point lead 10 minutes into the second half. Another Offaly goal merely stemmed the tide and Kilkenny were comfortable despite a fourth Offaly goal in injury time. There was a genuine welcome from all hurling followers for Brian Cody's return to the touch-line. However, despite progressing to the semi-final, where they will meet the winners of the Dublin v Wexford replay, he will no doubt be concerned by the concession of 4 goals in today's encounter. For next Sunday’s opening Leinster Championship tie against Offaly Brian Cody has announced two changes on the Kilkenny team from the side that started in recent National Hurling League Final. Michael Fennelly is unavailable due to injury and is replaced by the fit again Richie Power. T J Reid makes his first competitive appearance since last year’s All Ireland Final with Cillian Buckley dropping down to the subs bench. Another plus for Kilkenny is the return of Richie Doyle to the match day panel after a long lay-off due to injury.
