Kilkenny Clubs put players first

Bord na nOg - if you wish to have match reports & pictures appear here

That was the message received loud and clear from the Bord na nOg delegates at last Wednesday’s county board meeting held in Nowlan Park. Last year’s fixture disaster where clubs went over 17 weeks without a game due to the exam period and the extra round robin games in the All Ireland minor series will not happen this year.

The fixtures committee had worked tirelessly on the issue since last September and had come up with a solution after consulting all the stakeholders. There will be minor league games played right across April, May & July with the knock out stages of the cup & shield competitions being held in August. Again the latter stages of May & June are being left free for the exam period.

Chairman John Byrne thanked the clubs for giving the proposal the thumbs up for this where year they would play without their county players for the two league games in May. This is on a trial basis but would ensure that all 300 players in this age group would see game time in the month of May.

Wednesday night also the draws for the much anticipated hurling championships.

Start dates were confirmed for the Kilkenny Honda Centre Minor Championships of the 8th September. In Roinn A the tie that stands out is the clash of last year’s champions Mooncoin who have so many of last year’s heroes at their disposal take on the Roinn B winners in Thomastown who also had a fine run to the U-15 A final last year. Roinn B all eyes will be on Erins Own who’ll hoping to capitalise on the feel good factor being generated by Castlecomer CS whilst in Roinn C Ballyhale Shamrocks will be looking to accumulate more silverware.

The Duggan Steel U-13 Championships begin August 18th whilst the U-13 Duggan Steel U-15 Championship begins four days earlier. In the U-15 A will see a repeat of last year’s U-13 Roinn A final where James Stephens will be looking for revenge over Graigue Ballycallan. In Roinn B the big sharks lurking down there will clash in the first round when Thomastown & Dunammagin take on each other whilst in Roinn C Conahy Shamrocks and Ballyhale will be an interesting battle.
