Carlow prove too strong in Byrne Cup

At half time in Dr. Cullen Park a strong performance by Kilkennys footballers saw them trail 1-6 to 0-4 at the break in the first round of the O’Byrne Cup. Having lost two players through injury at the break the side added a further two points within five minutes to reduce the lead to 1-7 to 0-5. In the remainder of the game a sharper and fitter Carlow side upped the tempo and with goals in the eight and thirteenth minutes ran out 5-13 to 0-7 winners. On the day some fine defensive work saw former Wicklow star Tommy Walsh who lined out at full forward for Carlow held scoreless for fifty minutes. Showing  good movement early on the all of the sides scores came from corner forward Graham Lawlor who scored five from placed balls with one kicked and one fisted effort. The Kilkenny side was, David Garvey, Carlow TeamThomas Kehoe, Seoirse Kenny, Declan Grennan, John Cullinane, Ciarain Foran, Paddy Raftice, Emmett Verreker, Sean Mooney, Stephen Duggan, JJ Dunphy, Micheal Saunders, David Prendergast, James Culleton, Graham Lawlor (0-7).
