Allianz Hurling League Cork 1-17 Kilkenny 1-15

Kilkenny suffered their first competitive defeat of 2012 when losing out to Cork by two points in this Allianz Hurling League game played in front of almost 8,000 spectators in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Kilkenny seemed to be in a strong position when after leading by two points at the interval (1-10 to 1-8) they extended their advantage in the third quarter.

However, Cork fought back, and a pointed free from Patrick Horgan in the 56th minute, levelled matters at 1-13 each.The final quarter was most enteretaining as first Pat Horgan nudged Cork clear for the first time since the opening minute on 63 minutes, and then Richie Power, who finished with a total of 1-11, responded for Kilkenny. However Cork scored the final two points of the game as Kilkenny’s woes were compounded by the sending off of Richie Power.

Kilkenny had dominated the early stages, with Richie Power leading the way to score five of Kilkenny’s points to help Kilkenny into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead.

As the half progressed Cork played their way into the game and with Pat Horgan as chief marksman they reduced the difference to a single point, 0-8 to 0-7, before Kilkenny registered their only goal of the game after 29 minutes. Richie Power winning and converting a penalty.

Within three minutes Cork responded as Paudie O’Sulivan got to the end of a long range free and gave Kilkenny goalkeeper David Herity no chance from close range.

Kilkenny led by two at the break and Cork’s Conor Lehane registered the first score of the second half before Kilkenny took control and enjoyed their best spell of the game with points from Richie Hogan and two Richie Power frees. But Cork, displaying great belief hit back with with points from Jamie Coughlan and William Egan, before edging the win in an exciting finish.
