Press Release          Saturday 9th March

Kilkenny Senior Hurlers go to the Races

At Saturday’s National Hunt Meeting in Gowran Park details of “Kilkenny Senior Hurlers Family Race Day” were announced.   In a novel partnership Gowran Park and Kilkenny Senior Hurlers will host a Family Race Day on Saturday 23rd March. The event is a celebration of Kilkenny’s achievement of winning six of the last seven All Ireland Finals.  The races are named after Kilkenny Hurling legends such as Henry Shefflin,  Noel Hickey,  Tommy Walsh, J J Delaney,  Jackie Tyrrell ,  last year’s captain Eoin Larkin and  Manager Brian Cody together with the commercial sponsors – Netwatch Ireland  Ltd,  Kilkenny City & County Vintners, Ashgrove Stables, Aidan O Brien,  Breandan Long, Highway Safety Developments Ltd and Team Sponsors Glanbia.

The Kilkenny hurlers and backroom team will be in attendance along with the Mc Carthy Cup.  Co Board Chairman Ned Quinn welcomed this new association with Gowran Park and urged the supporters of the GAA in Kilkenny to “wear the jersey” and turn out in support of this truly exceptional team.  In fact wearing the jersey will be very apt on the day as a very attractive prize will be on offer to the most colourful Black and Amber Family. A prize of overnight accommodation in the Green Isle Hotel, sponsored by the Brennan Group, followed by a Day Pass to Tayto Park in Navan will be awarded to the winning family.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Most Appropriately Dressed Lady competition, sponsored by Pauls, with a €1,000 value prize comprising a €400 voucher for Pauls and a weekend away in Derry, the 2013 City of Culture. Deirdre Shefflin and Elaine Hickey – the glamorous wives of hurling legends and nine times All-Ireland medallists Henry Shefflin and Noel Hickey – will put their fashion sense to good use. The stylish GAA wives will be the judges of the Pauls Most Appropriately Dressed Lady competition.

There will also be an opportunity to win tickets to the eagerly anticipated Bruce Springsteen Concert in Nowlan Park in July. A draw will be held on the souvenir race card which will contain a photograph of the Kilkenny team and a special autograph page.

Besides the seven race National Hunt card there will be musical entertainment by the very popular Kilkennys. Children under 16 will be admitted free of charge and there will be a Children’s Play area with Bouncy Castles etc.    Tickets at €10 must be purchased in advance from County Board or Supporters Club Officers or from any of the Clubs in the County. Several clubs have already booked buses to make this a very special day out for their club members. There will be an opportunity to meet and greet the players and have photographs taken with the McCarthy Cup.

Being in the winners enclosure will have a whole new meaning in Gowran Park when the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Team host this very special race day on the local track.
