Presentation of GAA Books and Year Books by Kilkenny GAA County Board to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society.
At a function held in the Club House Hotel, Kilkenny on Monday 27th February, Kilkenny GAA County Board presented a range of books and other publications on various aspects of Gaelic Games in Kilkenny to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society. Included in the presentation were all the Kilkenny GAA Year Books from 1972 to 2017. The collection will be kept in the society’s library in Rothe House, Parliament Street.
The initiative was the brainchild of John Knox, former Principal of Gowran N.S. who also served as the Treasurer of Kilkenny Cumann na mBunscol for almost three decades. Mr. Knox thanked the various authors for making their books available for presenting to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society. He also indicated that Kilkenny County Board was encouraging anyone who had books or other Kilkenny GAA publications which they would like to donate to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society’s library, to drop them into the Librarian in Rothe House.
The collection was formally handed over to the President of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, Pat Nolan, by the former Chairman of Kilkenny GAA County Board Ned Quinn.
Mr. Quinn noted the significant role of the GAA in the lives of Kilkenny people since the Association was founded in 1884 and he was pleased that a significant volume of books and other publications which had been written about Gaelic games participants in the county was now being held in a key visitor centre in Kilkenny City.
On behalf of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, President Pat Nolan expressed delight at receiving such a significant range of written content on the GAA in Kilkenny. He noted that their society had few GAA publications and this collection would significantly enhance its library facility.
