Minor A Preview

(from Pado O Flynn PRO BNG Kilkenny)

Saturday sees a novel pairing in the Kilkenny Honda Centre Minor A final as the kingpins of underage hurling Dicksboro go for the three in a row titles as they look to equal Mooncoin’s marvellous team of 1960-62 who achieved the same.
On the other side you have Tullogher Rosbercon who are appearing in their first ever Minor A final having never won the Minor A or B contest in their history.
This promises to be a very interesting game to say the least in UPMC Nowlan Park. Dicksboro have had two searching tests in recent times. It took all their skill & expertise to overcome Naas in a very competitive league final. In fact it took some exceptional individual skill from one Harry Shine to get them across the line. Old foes and near neighbours James Stephens had one foot in the final when they a five point lead at the break but a strong finish from Dicksboro saw the Palmerstown outfit through with seven different scorers making contributions whilst Mikey Raggett off the bench got the key goal.
Harry Shine is obviously the key focal point for the team but one should not think this is a one man team. Declan Farrell’s hard work often lays on score for others around him whilst Cillian Hackett, Sean Keenan, Kyle Maher & Mick Carroll are other players of note.
Despite being their maiden Minor A final the men clad in black & yellow have being hurling up a stormer in the underage ranks for the past few years. This particular team contested two U-15 B finals eventually & deservedly getting over the line versus St Martins in the 2019 final. At a glance all ships seems to be rising with their last two U-13 teams also being considered noteworthy.
As they have gained more experience over the course of the seven league matches. Many fine performances were put including wins over Mount Leinster Rangers & O’Loughlin Gaels whilst there was only four points between the sides when they clashed with Dicksboro in the league.
Danny Glennon may be the main man upfront and he caused havoc in the impressive semi final win over Bennetsbridge he was joined up front by Marty Murphy who landed 2-2 from play. The two of them fed off each other whilst Jack Hendrick showed accuracy from play. At the back Lar Murphy has being seriously impressive from the centre half berth whilst David Kennedy is a strong presence at the edge of the square.
This game is a very tough one to call as the three in a row hasn’t being done in 60 years. This is the most competitive grade in Kilkenny. Evidence points towards Dicksboro lifting the trophy however these Tullogher men are made of stern stuff, they’ll have huge support in the park which will make this closer than one thinks.

Minor B Preview

The curtain raiser to Saturdays big game is the Kilkenny Honda Centre Minor B Hurling final throwing in at 1pm between Dunnamaggin & Danesfort.
Dunnamaggin have being at the business end of the underage championships for the last number of years. This experience may well be a big help to the southern side who will be underdogsAs they are missing their county minor starlet in the guise of Joe Fitzpatrick who got injured during their epic win over Tullaroan 0-24 to 3-14. Dunnamaggin made most of the running in that game. Some of the movement in the forward line was exceptional and to land such a tally was remarkable. Cathal Buckley & Ross Hickey made strong impressions over the course of the 60 minutes. They got their year off to a perfect start with a fine win over Mooncoin 1-8 to 2-18. A head of steam was beginning to build as another south derby win set them up for the Tullaroan game. A young side but they will hold no fear of entering the cauldron that is Nowlan Park.

Danesfort have steadily improved as the year has gone on. In the Semi final they caused a major shock when they defeated last years U-15 A finalists Graigue Ballycallan in another closely contested match that was a 7 goal thriller 4-15 to 4-13. Ben Whitty, Darragh Coverdale and Louie Jamieson were particularly prominent in these games. A first round win over Galmoy/Windgap showed promise whilst they were full value for their win over Erins Own in the quarter final.

The men from Cuffesgrange are trying to win the title for the first time having only a pair of Roinn C titles to show for their efforts at minor level & will be making their first appearance in the final since 2018, whilst Dunnamaggin will try to do what now team has ever done winning back to back Minor B titles – in fact if the Southern side win it’ll be their 3rd title since 2017 and will also take them above Mullinavat, Fenians, Rower Instioge.

Regardless of the outcome on Saturday history will be made!
