Kilkenny GAA Supporters Club are organising a fundraising event across County Kilkenny to raise funds for the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. The format for the event is a Club to Club Walk, linking all 41 club venues in Kilkenny, over a two-week period from Saturday. May 7th to Saturday May 21st. Tommy Maher and a small group of supporters will walk from club to club over 12 days of walking, covering approximately four clubs per day and finishing up in UPMC Nowlan Park on May 21st at the Kilkenny v. Wexford Leinster Championship Round 5 fixture.
Our chosen charity is the Irish Red Cross. Countless lives in Ukraine are being torn apart by violence and insecurity. Displacement, trauma, and separation from loved ones, will have devastating consequences on the people of Ukraine. Red Cross teams are on the ground now in Ukraine and will continue their work to repair vital infrastructure, support health facilities, and help families with life-saving food and hygiene items. This is a rapidly evolving crisis and your support will help provide those affected, with food, medicine, shelter and water while also helping the Red Cross to assist those displaced by conflict.
Kilkenny GAA Supporters Club has members in all clubs across County Kilkenny and beyond, and we hope that they will help us to encourage a generous response from the community of Kilkenny GAA supporters (and supporters of our neighbouring counties too!) The GAA is a community-based organisation, with a presence in every community in Ireland and GAA members appreciate the traumatic effects of the situation in which the people of Ukraine find themselves, on individuals, on families and on communities. We hope that our event, apart from the funds raised, will, in some small way, demonstrate our solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
In this same spirit, as a gesture of welcome to our community, it is the intention of Kilkenny GAA County Board to invite all Ukrainian refugees who have come to Kilkenny to join us as their guests at UPMC Nowlan Park for the Kilkenny v. Wexford game. This game will also be the finale of our fundraising event.
For our walk we would like to see as many as possible turn out at club venues to show their support. Because of the timetable for the walk this will be more difficult for some clubs but if you can’t be present at your own local club you can always come to another club at a more suitable time.
Please do not join us walking between clubs. We need to limit the number of walkers to a very small group so that we do not cause any traffic disruption and so that we do not have to control a large number of walkers. Please show your support at the club grounds.
Donations can be made in person at club grounds or through any of our Kilkenny GAA Supporters Club members.
We have also set up an iDonate account. We will circulate the link to this page and a QR Code over the next few days.
We are conscious that this is an imposition on club committees at such a busy time as competitions get into full swing but we would ask clubs to encourage your members, supporters and friends to support this fundraiser and perhaps give it an occasional plug on your own social media outlets.
We really appreciate your generous support for this worthy cause at a time when there are so many pressures and demands on every household’s finances.
On behalf of the Kilkenny GAA Supporters Club,
Yours Sincerely,
Tommy Maher
