Young Irelands 3-22; Glenmore 2-22
Young Irelands of Gowran, Junior F winners of 2024, advanced to the 2025 Junior E final with a three point victory over Glenmore after extra time in an enthralling contest at Pairc na Ratha on Thursday evening.
Before a decent crowd this contest was in doubt all through, with both sides having periods of dominance.
Young Irelands led 0-10 to 0-9 at the interval in a game dominated by frees from James Reid (Glenmore) and the evergreen Sean Kehoe for the visitors. Twelve minutes into that half Glenmore had led 0-6 to 0-2, but an unanswered five scores from Gowran gave them a slight interval advantage.
Young Irelands made an excellent start to the new half with a goal from Ciaran Byrne, along with two points from Sean Kehoe, the second a free.,
By the 40th minute they led by six points, 1-14 to 0-11, and with five minutes left they were still five points clear, but the most interesting segment of the game was to follow.
A James Reid goal along with points from Emmett Vereker and a further Reid free took the game into 20 minutes of extra time.
Full Time Glenmore 1-17; Young Irelands 1-17.
At the end of the first extra time period Gowran led 2-19 to 1-19, David Holland fining an attack that left three unmarked red and white Young Irelands men queuing up to finish close to the Glenmore goal.
While Patrick O’Connor got a goal on 75 minutes to leave Glenmore just a point behind, and despite a late Gowran sending off, the red and whites emerged victorious, Ciaran Byrne getting their third goal.
These competitions are for upcoming and stars of the past and members of the latter like Tom Drennan, along with Sean and Paul Kehoe, were Gowran’s top performers here.
For Glenmore players like James Reid and Patrick O’Connor started in a game where several players of both sides cramped up late on in the hard ground conditions.
The Junior A to F finals are all being held in Nowlan Park over the third and fourth weekends in August. If fare like this is on offer some great entertainment awaits.
