Kilkenny GAA pays tribute to Jim Treacy (Bennettsbridge)

Kilkenny GAA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Treacy, former Kilkenny hurler and proud Bennettsbridge clubman.

Referred to as the “silver fox” by Micheál Ó Hehir, Jim was a central figure during a golden era for both club and county.  With Bennettsbridge, he helped guide “The Bridge” to remarkable success, playing a key role in the club’s Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship victories in 1962, 1964, 1966, 1967 and 1971.  His commanding presence, skill and determination made him one of the standout defenders of his generation.

In a distinguished inter-county career with Kilkenny, Jim achieved extraordinary success, winning:
6 All-Irelands (1963, 1967, 1969, 1972, 1974 & 1975)
9 Leinster Championships (1964, 1966-67, 1969, 1971-75)
1 National League (1966)
4 Railway Cup (1967, 1971-73)
3 Oireachtas titles (1966, 1967, 1969)
3 Walsh Cup (1970, 1973-74)
1 Vocational School Leinster Championship (1962)

His outstanding performances earned him two All-Stars (1971 & 1972) in recognition of his immense contribution to the game.

One of the proudest moments of Jim’s career came in 1967 when he captained Kilkenny to All-Ireland glory, lifting the MacCarthy Cup after victory over Tipperary at Croke Park.

Jim embodied everything that is best about the GAA: loyalty to club and county, sportsmanship and deep pride in his community.  Beyond his many achievements on the field, Jim was admired for the respect and dignity with which he carried himself and he will be remembered as a gentleman whose legacy will endure.

Kilkenny GAA extends its deepest sympathy to Jim’s wife Marie, his children Ann, Aileen, James, Marian and David, brother Willie , sons- and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, extended family and friends, and to everyone in Bennettsbridge GAA at this sad time.
