One of the longest running hurling tournaments in County Kilkenny, the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Under 13 Lisdowney 7’s tournament has been hosted by Lisdowney GAA Club for the past 31 years. On the 20th July, the 32nd Annual JJ Kavanagh & Sons Under 13 Lisdowney 7’s tournament will kick off with games starting at 10am. Officials from Lisdowney GAA club are delighted to announce a new sponsor for this event – JJ Kavanagh & Sons, Coach & Bus Hire, Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny.
Preparations for this event started back in April when dates for the tournament were set and the database of teams was drafted. A total of 45 GAA clubs were contacted about this tournament. This list comprised of all the clubs in Co. Kilkenny and clubs from outside the county that have been loyal to the tournament over the years, the list also included clubs that have expressed an interest over the past 12 months in participating in the tournament. A total of 32 clubs will participate in the event again this year. Of the 32 clubs participating, 24 of these are from Kilkenny, 3 from Laois and 1 club each from Clare, Tipperary, Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. The interest in this year’s tournament was so strong that there is a waiting list of seven teams.
Many famous names have passed through this tournament down through the years,
DJ Carey, Cha Fitzpatrick, Henry Shefflin, Conor Fogarty and Richie Hogan to mention but a few. Interestingly, all of the above also won Best Player Award – a much sought after title in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Lisdowney Under 13 Hurling 7’s tournament. On the current Kilkenny Senior panel no less than 8 players have been on the winning team, Henry Shefflin, Michael Fennelly, Colin Fennelly, TJ Reid, Jackie Tyrell, Tommy Walsh, Richie Hogan and Cillain Buckley.
Thanks to all those Clubs that have confirmed their interested in participating in this years event. Lisdowney GAA club wishes all teams participating in the tournament the very best of luck. Finally a special word of thanks to our new sponsors JJ Kavanagh & Sons.
