In May 2023 a number of people met in UPMC Nowlan Park with a vision to get Kilkenny back competing at intercounty football at underage level. With the help of Leinster Council and many others, a plan was formulated to commence in October 2023.
Huge numbers attended the pilot scheme at U-15 level, resulting in two teams taking on Carlow.
Follow up training saw the team progress to U-16 in 2024 and this side competed well against Carlow, Tipperary and Waterford in the last number of months in the O’Donovan Cup.
Numbers at training have been very high with clubs facilitating their players’ involvement which has led to an improvement in standards across the board.
A big thank you to all who helped make this happen and to the efforts of Eoin Hennessy, Pat Nolan, Mark Hender, Paudie Bradley & Davey Lyons with great support from Games Manager Brian Ryan, Performance Lead Michael Fennelly & GDC Philip Campion.
The team will now look forward to 2025 where they aim to be the first Kilkenny team to compete at minor level since 2019.
