Bord na nÓg update – Week 18

By Mary Morgan Mon 15th Jul

There was a significant clash between Erin’s Own & Tullaroan in the Duggan Steel U-15 Roinn B league where the men in the sash cane away with the spoils 3-16 to 1-20. In a game played at a frenetic pace Gearoid Dunne gave an exhibition of attacking play akin to one Richie Power when he was racking up scores for fun at underage level. He was ably assisted by James Dillon & Niall Holland with some of the stick work on display proving these teams will probably be looking at Roinn A titles in Minor. Evan Harding & Conor Brophy both were but it was not enough to stop the Tullaroan men in their drive for the points. The other back match in the U-15 hurling league saw Cloonen/Railyard gain a 2-12 to 1-11 win over Mooncoin in their  trip down the south of the county.

In the U-13 hurling leagues Dicksboro & Piltown ran in goals in their respective wins over Thomastown & Kilmacow. Tullogher Rosbercon took the spoils by 4-12 to 2-11 over Piltown later on in the week. In Roinn C Tullaroan & Slieverue had good wins over Rower Inistioge & Bagenalstown respectively.

Erin’s Own 3-11 1-7 St Martins

The Duggan Steel U-13 Roinn B County Football Final saw Erin’s Own & St Martins square up after a close tight drawn match where no quarter was given.

This game was no exception and Erin’s Own got off to a flying start with James Coogan & Conor Brophy pointing in the opening exchanges. ‘Martins settled soon after with Michael Keane & Aaron Coogan grabbing a point a piece.

James Coogan scored a brilliant goal after a neat swapping of passes with Kevin Buggy. The midfielder added a point & Conor Buggy fired over one of his own.

A lesser team would have folded but fair dues to the young saints they cut deficit in the run up to half time with Jake Dowling & Keane sending the white flag waving having Erin’s Own ahead 1-4 to 0-4.

Again Erin’s Own made a better start to the second half as Conor Buggy & James Coogan all pointed.

Michael Ruane got ‘Martins on the board for the second half with a fine converted ‘45 but Coogan instantly responded with one of his own.

The game sprung to life when Jake Dowling got on the end of long clearance to goal.

Coogan again led the response with two fine points. They went further ahead as two quick goals from the relocated Jack Coogan saw real daylight develop between the teams.

Keane briefly lifted the enveloping siege kicking over a point off his right leg.

In the end Erin’s Own were worthy winners and their efficiency in attack was probably the difference between the sides as Martins 16 wides proved to be costly.
